Braque Gris Beckmann

A few things about Braque that has to be known to be able to read the design, and conceptual ideals behind this building.  Braque is a very humble man, very artistic and very musical, spending most of his time studying these two arts.  He lives his life very spiritually and would call him self a buddhist, but considers himself also very cosmic.  There is no uniformity in Braque's life, and finds social city dwelling a bore, and wants his home to reflect the human he is.

I took on this assignment with the concept of the "character" deep in my mind.  This was the fundamental part of the conceptual process as I went about the project as if I was actually Braque and I was designing my own home.

Nature, music, art, and liveability were now the things running the design.

Wanting the house to be closely connected to the natural form, and to the natural elements proved to be hard.  When thinking of nature you think of flora and fauna.  But nature is a large word and in essence is anything that is on Earth.

The wave form won my attention. It is pure, organic, and can be manipulated to serve as many different structures.  I took the idea of the wave and used this to create my structure.

In this space, thinking with livibility had it's downfalls.  This wall that is placed here (top picture) was placed in-spite of livability, it would have surved a better purpose on either side of the structure, but destroyed the flow of the building and destroyed the wave, so it was placed mostly ornamentally on this elevation.

When working on the second analogue model, I wanted it to follow the wave theme, keep the concept, but change how the structure comes together

This led to the development of reading the structure, reading the different levels, and scales within the walls of the building.

Digital Models

Once again, stuck with the wave, but used multiple Cylinder shapes to pull off the effect

Repeated the same basic structure 3 times and rotated them 45 degrees to create 3 different spaces for the 12 units, each space is stuck together with a floating walkway to bring, movement into the structure.

The second digital model was once again working with the ground plane and the roof plane of the structure, trying to cocoon, the inside living elements with irrational geometries.
